History of Diamonds

We all know and understand pretty well that Diamond is for sure nature’s most precious stone. And out of all the materials in the world diamond is the hardest of all. The word Diamond is derived from the Greek word “Adamas” which means ‘the invincible”. Diamonds are created by the carbonic gases deep within the earth’s core in the presence of high temperature and extreme pressure applying to it. The world’s largest diamond mines are located in Australia, South Africa, and Russia. The very first diamonds of the world were discovered in India and they use to be the sole property of Kings and Royalties who wore them in their time as a symbol of royalty.

The raw stone formed in the core of the earth doesn’t show all the outstanding and extraordinary qualities of Diamond straightaway. It requires exceptional cutting and polishing skill to finally reveal its inner beauty and is considered a worth gem. The cutting and polishing work of diamond is an exceptionally tough and delicate process and it demands a high level of skills, knowledge, tools, and experience to actually turn that piece of raw stone into a worth gem.

The 4 C’s of Diamond’s

Diamonds are one of the finest gems in the world. The fact that makes them even better is that we all love wearing them and in all forms, they make a perfect gift for the love of our life, partner, member, in fact, anyone in life. But as they say, all good things come with a price and in the case of diamonds, the price we have to pay is judgment. It’s pretty hard to find out the quality of a diamond but the good thing is there is a certain test that can help us a great deal in finding the perfect diamond. The 4 C’s are very well-known within the jewelry industry. They are the complete guideway to measure the nobility, craftsmanship, and value of the diamond.

 Cut

The cut is basically the most important phase which determines the quality of a diamond and also plays a significant role in presenting its beauty. The term Diamond Cut indicates towards the quality of a diamond’s angles, proportions, symmetrical aspects, exquisiteness, glitter, and finishing details. The ability of a diamond to sparkle and its aesthetic charm mainly depends upon the mentioned features. In other words, the skill of the craftsman directly impacts the quality and beauty of a diamond. According to Cut, diamonds can be classified into 4 grades: Ideal, very good, good, and poor.  Diamonds with a better cut grade will always be more expensive.

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to the presence or absence of natural inclusions or blemishes in the diamond. The shape of a diamond affects the clarity grade of a diamond, brilliant-cut shapes such as round and princess can hide the imperfections to some extent but the step-cut such as the emerald make the inclusions more visible. Clarity is graded according to GIA as follows

  • FL (Flawless)
  • IF (Internally Flawless)
  • VVS1 (Very, Very Slightly Included 1)
  • VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included 2)
  • VS1 (Very Slightly Included 1)
  • VS2 (Very Slightly Included 2)
  • SI1 (Slightly Included 1)
  • SI2 (Slightly Included 2)
  • I1 (Inclusions 1)
  • I2 (Inclusions 2)

Colour

The diamond colour grade gives a measure to how little colour it reflects, the diamond colour can be graded from D to Z. A diamond given D grade means it is colorless and pure white whereas the diamond deemed as a Z contains a yellow or brown tint.  There is sometimes a significant change in the price of a diamond due to its color grade, mostly the naked eye cannot differentiate between different grades and the diamonds may appear similar to the people but the change in price can indicate the grade difference.

Carat

Carat is a term that is related to the weight of the diamond and not its shape or size. There might be a difference in the shape and size of two 1 carat (1 carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams) diamonds.

Difference between Natural and Lab-Created Diamonds

The main difference between natural and lab-created diamonds is the way or process in which a diamond is created.

Natural Diamonds

Natural mined diamonds are formed underneath the earth's crust in high temperatures and high pressure.

Lab-Created Diamonds

The lab-created diamonds are produced inside labs with the help of an artificial process, in a highly controlled environment with the help of the latest technology similar conditions are replicated in which the natural diamonds are formed inside the earth's crust.
