Where the Name "Omega" Actually Comes From

The company was founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, but it was not called Omega yet. In 1894, Brandt's sons developed a groundbreaking new movement called the "Omega caliber," named after the last letter of the Greek alphabet to signal the ultimate achievement in watchmaking. The caliber was such a success that the company renamed itself after it in 1903. Decades later, Omega earned another distinction: NASA selected the Speedmaster after extensive testing, and it became the first watch worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

• The caseback engraving. Many modern Omega models have a laser-etched Omega symbol on the sapphire caseback that is only visible at certain angles under light. Fakes often use a flat, printed logo that lacks this dimensional effect.
• Serial and reference numbers. Genuine Omega serial numbers correspond to a documented production date and reference. Numbers that do not match the model's known production era are a red flag.
• Movement smoothness. Omega's Co-Axial escapement movements run smoothly with a sweeping second hand and minimal noise. Rough ticking or an audible quartz tick on a model that should be mechanical is disqualifying.
• The helium escape valve. On Seamaster dive models, check for a functioning helium escape valve at the 10 o'clock position. This detail is frequently omitted or non-functional on counterfeits.
• Weight and finishing. Genuine cases and bracelets are solid and precisely finished, with brushed and polished surfaces that transition cleanly. Fakes tend to feel lighter and show inconsistent finishing.

• Constellation. Look for a flawless, sharp dial with even logo printing and symmetrical claw settings around the crystal.
• Seamaster. The case back should show a finely engraved seahorse; compare the bezel and dial against genuine specifications.
• De Ville. Check for precise dial detailing, correct hallmarks, and clean text alignment with no spacing errors.

A Simple Magnet Test

Models with Master Chronometer certification are built to resist magnetic fields. Holding a magnet near a certified watch shouldn't affect its running rate at all — if it does, that's a strong sign something is off.
